If you’ve ever thought, I don’t have time to budget, this episode is for you!
5 Quick & Easy Budget Fixes
1. Rename Your Accounts for Motivation & Accountability
One of the easiest and most effective ways to change your spending habits is to rename your bank accounts. Instead of generic names like “Savings” or “Checking,” use labels that add a layer of accountability.
✅ Examples of Account Names:
- “Do Not Touch” – For your fixed bills account.
- “Vacation Fund – Hands Off!” – To keep your savings on track.
- “Emily’s Wedding 2026” – So you don’t “borrow” from it for dinner.
Why does this work? It adds friction to bad financial decisions and makes you think twice before transferring money for impulse buys.
2. Delete Saved Credit Cards from Shopping Apps
If your Amazon or Target app has your payment info saved, it’s way too easy to make unnecessary purchases. Remove saved credit and debit cards from these platforms so that making a purchase requires extra effort.
✅ Where to Delete Saved Cards:
- Amazon
- Venmo
- PayPal
- Apple Pay
- Any “Buy Now, Pay Later” services (Afterpay, Klarna, etc.)
Why? If you have to manually enter your card information (or worse, get up to grab your wallet), you’ll think twice before making impulse purchases.
3. Hide Bank Accounts to Reduce Temptation
Most banking apps allow you to hide certain accounts from your main dashboard. This is a powerful trick to prevent you from “accidentally” spending money that should be left alone.
✅ Accounts to Consider Hiding:
- Emergency Fund
- Tax Savings
- Vacation Fund
If you don’t see it, you won’t be tempted to spend it!
4. Use Notes When Transferring Money
Every time you move money between accounts, use the bank’s note feature to record why you did it. Later, when you’re reviewing your spending, you’ll have clear documentation of where your money went.
✅ Examples of Helpful Transfer Notes:
- “Car maintenance – Oil change”
- “Home repair – New water heater”
- “Back-to-school shopping for kids”
This is especially helpful when reviewing finances at tax time or tracking how much you’ve spent in specific categories.
5. Delete Shopping Apps from Your Phone
If you want to cut down on mindless spending, removing shopping apps from your phone is a game-changer.
✅ Apps to Consider Deleting:
- Amazon
- Target
- Etsy
- Any retail store apps
Out of sight, out of mind! You can always log in on a desktop if you truly need to buy something, but this simple step eliminates temptation throughout the day.
Bonus Tip: Schedule a 5-Minute Money Check-In
Budgeting doesn’t have to take hours! Set a weekly five-minute “money date” with yourself to check your accounts, track spending, and ensure everything is running smoothly.
✅ When to Do Your Money Check-In:
- While waiting in the Starbucks drive-thru
- During your lunch break
- While sitting in the car line at school
The more consistently you check in, the easier budgeting will feel over time.

Alright, so we got five. This is going to be a quick and awesome episode for you because you know, that’s how we are.
We are quick. We’re not long winded at all. Well, and it’s a Monday, and we know that, listen, you have things to do, you have places to go, you ain’t got time. You ain’t got time, but this is what we’re going to help you, so you have you have small things that you can do with your time. Okay, the first thing that we want you to do is is rename your accounts.
Now this is super, super important. So we obviously want you to separate accounts, but we want you to rename your accounts. The first time that I, we had clients do this, they renamed their bills account to I can’t touch this or whatever it was and do not use this. One of our clients renamed it to touch this and die.
That was a little, a little more dramatic, aggressive, but then when I really, I thought those are fun and we do think that it’s important to to do that cause it’s just adding something cool to your life. But then when my client, we set up a a wedding. Account for her daughter. I was like, Oh, you’re really not going to steal from that one.
Like that one is really like, you might steal from other things, but I bet that one’s going to hit a little harder if you actually steal from it. Well, and I even think like, you know, the, the adulting part of setting up a savings bucket is that annual bills account. And if you name it annual bills. Versus like we’re just saving for something in the future that we think we may spend money on eventually like no, you know Oh, this is a bill.
I can’t steal from that because it’s coming up. It’s not like a maybe right? Yeah And oh, yeah, well, and I was just gonna say like we have a savings bucket. It’s called savings CEO trip to Bali, and we’re so excited. So, yeah, it’s like 40 cents or something. I don’t even start funding it super soon. We are, but the point is we named the account and we know when we start funding it, it’s going to be so funny.
We’re not going to want to sell for rent. We also have one. That’s a giving, that’s a giving savings because we know that we want to give back. We do give gift cards every now and then and we want to support moms and stuff. And so we want to have, we want to have some funds there available to be able to give back to our listeners.
Now, this particular fix is not going to change your life, right? What it’s going to do though is add a little friction. What you need is a little friction in making the bad choices. If you ever read James Clear, Atomic Havoc, that’s what he’s talking about is we want to make the wrong thing harder. And the good thing easier, right?
Or the right thing easier. So saving for this is going to become easier because you have it there. You see it visualized, you see it growing, right? That’s going to become easier, but stealing from it is going to become harder because you’re going to literally say, Oh, this is my Hawaii trip. I’m stealing from that to go out to eat.
How silly am I feeling? Or your daughter is like, when you think about your daughter’s wedding. So if you say like Emily’s wedding, 2026 or something, You’re going to be less likely to steal from it to go out to dinner because you know, like, Oh, I really, I know I’m going to have that wedding to pay for. I don’t want to steal from my daughter’s fund.
Yeah. For, especially for usually when we’re stealing, it’s something kind of trivial, right? Yeah. It’s, you’re usually tempted in the moment and that’s not, we don’t, nobody makes good decisions when you’re hungry at the grocery store. Now, listen, you can do all of these in car line. You can do them, you know, when you’re on your lunch break, there’s so many things waiting at Starbucks for your food.
So the next one is delete your saved credit cards. This is so important. Save credit cards and even debit cards, depending on the type of what account it’s coming from. Yeah. We want to delete those from Amazon, from, from Venmo, from wherever you buy stuff, delete them off there. Make it hard. Again, we’re talking about friction, right?
If you go to Lululemon, yes, girl, and you have to type in like a Neanderthal, your credit card information, You might be less likely to actually do it. And if you have to like go out to your car to get your credit card information, it’s like gross. And like right now it’s pouring or get out from the couch, right?
Like to get your purse, like, oh, that’s a whole different level. . Like right now it’s pouring outside. So like if we wanted to buy something and we had to go out there to get it, we’re probably not gonna happen. So it just, like Shayna said, it adds that level of friction and we want those cards. Completely removed from any online platform.
I know y’all have PayPal. We know you got Venmo. We know you have that sizzle at a firm and whatever. Get rid of all of those. You don’t need them. Apple is the worst because, and some of these don’t let you nickname it. So you don’t know what account it’s actually pulling from. So you have to actually like get the card and read the last four, the number, like it becomes a pain.
Just be disciplined enough to remove all the debit cards and credit cards that you don’t need in those certain areas. And only, only, only, only, only, only leave your debit card on there. And, you know, worst case scenario, you can still get the thing from the thing, from the place.
You’re going to just have to get up off your booty and go get your card to put it in. That’s okay. Like it’s not that we’re taking away completely. We’re making it harder so you don’t make the wrong decisions. And if you’ve gone a little extra and you’ve already got a bills account, you’ve got a gas and groceries, super important to take this to that level to make sure the bills card is off of everything.
And the groceries card is only being used for groceries. We’re not paying. And this is another one. We had a student Switch all of the subscriptions for food or anything like that, or in Instacart, whatever that may have been coming out of bills. If we’re going to have a restaurant’s card, if we’re going to have a gas and groceries card, we’re going to move them to that.
And honestly, like we want you to be successful. We don’t want you to pull up your bills account at the end of the month and realize that you had 20 Amazon subscriptions or 20 Amazon. Well, we also just don’t want that. Cause I hate putting it in their budget. Well, that’s what I was going to say. I had a client who this actually happened.
She went out of town, love her husband so much. He used, he went on Amazon and went on like a hunting. Excursion, right? Yes, he just bought all these hunting things. And she’s like just shopping, right? Shopping for hunting things. And she came back and it was like 40 Amazon charges from using the bills account.
And I said, so now there’s no money. I don’t know who that was. There’s no money in the bills account to pay for the rest of your bills. So it just causes It causes some upset in your budgeting system. And so we messes it all up. We really want to move all of those to your spending accounts and know that your bills account does nothing but pay bills.
And again, not that you don’t get it. You can go get all your hunting stuff. It’s just coming from your spending. Just it’s just extra work if you mess it up and put it in the bills 📍 Budget besties. here’s the deal. Budgeting doesn’t have to take forever. What we want you to do is think about if I can put my calendar once a week, I’m just checking in, especially when you’re new at it. I’m checking in with my accounts, making sure everything’s going the way it is, especially as I’m getting everything that we’re teaching set up.
That’s what we want you to do is just set up that five minute money date with yourself just to check in with everything. Yes, absolutely. And you know, like she alluded to, if you’re new at this and you don’t feel comfortable waiting till the end of the month because you know, one of the things we like to say is there’s 365 days in a year.
We need 12 of those to set a budget up and move forward and be successful. However, we know that most people really want to check in every week and go, okay, is this what really happened until they really get the flow of how their budget works? They just want to double check. That’s fine. We want you to do that.
We don’t want you to spend an hour a week doing that. We just want you to quickly check in with your bills account. Just make sure everything is on track. Okay. Here’s another one that is really cool. So obviously we want you to use some of the tools that’s available that are available for your In your banking app, bank app, right?
So one thing that you can do is hide accounts. This is important. Hide your kids, had your wife, right? Remember that was funny. Once it was like a techno auto tune thing. So we want you to hide your accounts. You don’t need to see all the savings and all of the different accounts because you might be tempted to be like, Hmm, there’s money to spend, right?
Just let it set over there and you can hide them from your view. And it just helps you to make good choices. You know what we, so we do this. Okay. So we as a, as personally and in our business, we hide our account. So we have a tax account for our business and we don’t even show it. Like there’s no point of even seeing it when we pull up the regular view of all of our accounts.
Like why, what is the point of having it there? We know that the money is there. We know what it’s for. We don’t need to be tempted to go, Oh, look, look at all this money. If we want to buy a course or whatever, that we have this, no, it’s not available to us. It’s actually designated for something else. So hide the accounts.
And like Shana said, there are some, So many tools available to you that are already there. Nothing you have to create. There’s no other app you have to go download to get all this. Your bank app actually does a lot and has a lot of tools. So we just want you to utilize them. Okay. What I thought Vanessa is we should give them a bonus one, which is your favorite, which is the notes, the notes on the transfer.
That’s a bonus five minute thing to use that every time they transfer. Yeah. So when you make a transfer, it’s really, really nice. I love going back into my vehicle maintenance fund. I just did this actually, cause I was doing taxes. Super fun times last night and I went into my home repair account and I was like, okay, what, what upgrades did we make to our house in 2024?
And I just went and looked at every withdrawal and looked at the note to see what it said, you know, how I spent my money and it showed me, and then I knew where to go get my receipt from. Well, and as you’re getting going with budgeting, just hold yourself accountable to naming why you transferred, right?
This is just an accountability thing. It takes two seconds when you transfer money from one account to another and just write it in there. Hold yourself accountable that way. And if your bank doesn’t offer a note section for the transfers, I suggest that you suggest it to them. So put in a request or get some feedback, right?
Get a new bank. But it’s really, it’s a really great feature. So we hope that your bank has that for you. Okay. Our last one is super obvious. But stick with us because we have heard as obvious as it is. We have heard so many times how effective it was. We’ve actually had people tell us like, thank you for telling me to do that.
And this is delete apps off of your phone people. Okay. And your kid’s phones. Oh yes, for sure. And lock those babies up. Like they can’t make purchase purchases, excuse me, without your approval. But listen, if you don’t have the apps in front of you like staring at you on your screen, you’re less likely to use them and you’re less likely to go get your computer, go on the web browser and make the purchase.
Yeah. It’s just, and we’ve had clients tell us this. We’ve had people just email us in that we’re listening to the podcast, but delete the. I don’t know. What do people shop? What can you shop on your phone? Everything. Somebody even said the Venmo app. Thank you for having me delete the Venmo app. Yeah, delete Venmo, delete PayPal, delete.
Wherever you shop from, delete it off of your phone, which again, we’re never saying that you can’t do that. We’re saying we’re going to have to be way more intentional. You know, I, this is not, this is not directly correlated, but I did hear yesterday that Tik Tok, it takes 45 minutes for your child.
I don’t know if that’s how it relates to it at all. 45 minutes of being on Tik Tok for their brain to become addicted. Okay. And that’s because they know exactly what they’re doing. Now, these other apps. They’re not incorrect. How long, how, how long have you like just scroll looking at stuff that you could potentially buy, right?
They are, they are not on your side. They’re on the side of making money. So again, it’s not that you’re not like, but when you want to get something, log on the website, do it. Get your card out from, well, where far away in your wallet and go buy it intentionally. Don’t be, don’t be there, be a victim to what they’re being paid and really good at, which is getting you to spend your money.
And you don’t need to have your credit card or I’m sorry, excuse me, your debit card information saved in all these platforms. I know. Facebook has a way for you to save your information, Instagram what’s the other one? Like you just said, tech TikTok, they all have ways for you to save your information.
So all you have to do is click buy or whatever, and it’s yours. So, and also for those of you that have memorized your debit card information,
I love that for you, but also no. So if you have it memorized and you know, well, if I delete it, I just have it. I’ll just type it right back in, go to your bank and tell them that you need a new card and get a whole new number. So that way you’re starting fresh and don’t, don’t, don’t memorize it. Yeah. And then don’t memorize this one.
Yeah, and it’s funny how fast kids brains are. My kids have halfway memorized the speech that my daughter memorized because she’s given it to them so many times. So, we’re, my brain’s not like that. Your client was amazing that had it all memorized. No, thank you. I, I do not have any room in my filing cabinet for that.
No. But if you’re that person, just don’t do that. Okay. So, these were really fast. Okay? They’re really easy. They’re doable. They’re, you know, maybe you’re working on implementing the whole system that we’ve given you. Just do these things. Pick one. Pick two to do today. Yeah. And it’s just going to help you.
And it’s just a reminder that budgeting doesn’t have to be overwhelming. These are just small tweaks that they really can add up and help you be successful long term. All right, so we want to hear from you. You can come on over in our Facebook group, or you can just email us at hello at budgetbesties.
com. We’d love to hear which one, which one you do and which one makes the difference for you. And if you’re watching this on YouTube, tell me how many times my earring distracted you with the light. Oh, did it distract you? Yes. Every time I talk, I see the light shining in them. So, so yeah. So then, you know, earrings.
That’ll be our next topic. Text me the number of how many times.
